Welcome

This advanced Industrial Design studio aims to cultivate designers for social entrepreneurship by examining the role of design in this field, identifying key methodologies and models of social entrepreneurship, and investigating the power of product, system and service design to create positive social and environmental change. This semester, as social entrepreneurial designers, students will use design and design thinking to address social and environmental issues prevalent in Providence and our surrounding communities. In partnership with Social Venture Partners Rhode Island (SVPRI), students will have the opportunity to work with a network of local non-profits and social ventures to examine different models of social enterprise and work to develop in-depth proposals for new or existing ventures that will benefit these organizations and our local community.

Case Study Mid Review April 4th

Social Ventures Partners Rhode Island (SVPRI) provides a comprehensive support system for the needs of the growing social enterprise sector in Rhode Island.  SVPRI has a network of over 100 ventures to  provide business consulting, mentorship, incubation and investment. As a leader in social enterprise development they are being asked to replicate their “eco-system” model, programs and expertise in new sectors.  Over the past three weeks, In collaboration with SVPRI, this studio has worked to research and develop case studies for a selection of social ventures that SVPRI has supported to better understand this “eco-system” approach.
These ventures include:
By With Heart
Maternova
My Happy Shirts
Providence Granola Project
Riverz Edge Arts
Save Chocolateville

Student teams are investigating each venture to compare social issues, models of entrepreneurship, support/ services provided by SVPRI and future needs or growth opportunities of the venture.  As a studio we are also developing representational methods for presenting and marketing social venture issues.

Students have been in the field interviewing venture founders, stakeholders and participants to observe and gain insights into the successes and challenges of these ventures.  On Thursday, April 4th the studio will be joined by Kelly Ramirez of SVPRI (www.svpri.org) and Maureen Cronin of Worldways Social Marketing for a mid-point review of the visual case studies.  The final case study presentations will be held Tuesday, April 16th.
